Information Systems Technician (IT) Instructor
Overview
We are seeking an experienced IT Instructor to deliver classroom and hands-on instruction for adult learners in support of a federal training mission in Petaluma, California. In this role, you will teach technical curriculum covering premise distribution/structured cabling, fiber fundamentals, telephony/PBX concepts, network fundamentals, and system administration.
Established course curriculum and lesson plans are provided. You will focus on high-quality delivery, coaching, assessment, remediation, and maintaining training records in accordance with training center standards.
What You’ll Teach (Representative Topics)
- Premise Distribution / Structured Cabling: installation, splicing, and testing of horizontal/backbone cabling; basic telephony circuits; safety (including confined space and hazardous materials).
- Fiber Optics: theory, cable plant installation, handling/pulling, splicing/termination, testing, troubleshooting, and safety practices.
- Telephony / PBX: telephony fundamentals; voicemail concepts; installations through digital trunking concepts; public address troubleshooting (platform exposure may include Avaya/Nortel environments).
- Networking: switching/routing fundamentals and related infrastructure concepts; connectivity elements used across enterprise environments.
- System Administration: installation/configuration of servers and client devices; user/groups/passwords; antivirus/backups; Exchange mailboxes/distribution lists/public folders; troubleshooting tools and procedures.
- Operational Workflow: managing work orders and incident tickets in a simulated operational environment and coaching students through applied troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver classroom, laboratory, and practical instruction aligned to established course curriculum and training schedules.
- Prepare training areas; pick up/return training devices; perform basic maintenance on training aids and equipment.
- Evaluate student performance by verifying understanding, competency, and ability to demonstrate applied knowledge.
- Conduct student critiques; provide academic counseling; schedule remedial training and retests when needed.
- Assist with grading written tests and performance-based evaluations; review and grade homework/projects.
- Maintain class status reports, training records, and required documentation per training center policies.
- Incorporate relevant lessons learned and evolving techniques/procedures to strengthen daily instruction.
- Support classroom computer systems: troubleshooting, hardware/software upgrades, routine backups, and equipment replacement as required.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma (or equivalent).
- 2+ years experience as a primary classroom instructor.
- Certification in CompTIA A+ or CompTIA Network+.
- U.S. citizen and able to pass a background check.
- CPR certification (current or ability to obtain/maintain).
- Working knowledge of electrical safety and safe use of tools/test equipment.
- Demonstrated subject matter expertise in:
- Data network software/hardware
- Client/server environments
- Microsoft products
- Helpdesk/ticketing operations
- Disaster recovery fundamentals
- Troubleshooting and following system administration/network maintenance procedures
- Use of test equipment in maintaining/repairing computer and related equipment
Preferred Qualifications
- Background teaching or supporting any of: structured cabling, fiber installation/testing, telephony/PBX, network switching/routing, or Windows Server administration.
- Experience coaching adult learners in hands-on lab environments and performance-based assessment.
