Operations Specialist Instructor
We are seeking an experienced Operations Specialist Instructor to teach and mentor adult students at a federal training center in Petaluma, California. This role is ideal for Coast Guard or Navy operations professionals who enjoy teaching, mentoring, and sharing real-world experience in a structured classroom environment, while maintaining a stable, primarily weekday schedule.
Overview
As an Operations Specialist Instructor, you will deliver classroom-based instruction focused on Search and Rescue (SAR) and Command Center operations using an established federal training curriculum. You will teach students preparing for operational roles supporting Coast Guard mission execution, decision-making, and communications.
All training curriculum, lesson plans, and instructor onboarding are provided. Instructors receive structured instructor training and are not expected to design coursework from scratch.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver classroom instruction for adult learners in Command Center and SAR operations
- Teach Coast Guard mission areas including SAR, marine safety, aids to navigation, environmental response, and coastal security
- Instruct Command, Control, and Communications (C3) procedures and operational best practices
- Lead scenario-based discussions focused on operational decision-making and resource coordination
- Teach radio communications, voice circuit configuration, and situational awareness principles
- Guide students in SAR case coordination, reporting, and operational workflow
- Evaluate student performance and provide coaching, feedback, and remediation as needed
- Maintain a professional, organized, and disciplined classroom environment
- Model professionalism, teamwork, and operational leadership
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior service as a Coast Guard Operations Specialist
- Experience as a CIC Watch Supervisor or Operations Unit Controller
- Comparable U.S. Navy operational experience
- Experience working in command centers, CIC environments, or similar operational settings
- Experience handling sensitive or classified information
Schedule & Benefits
- Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday (daytime hours)
- Holidays: 12 paid federal holidays
- Compensation: Competitive hourly pay plus a separate Health & Welfare stipend
