Role Summary
The CMT Department Manager leads Construction Materials Testing operations—owning project delivery, field and laboratory oversight, people leadership, quality, safety, and financial performance. This leader manages the full lifecycle of CMT projects while developing a high-performing team.
Key Responsibilities

Manage end-to-end field services and laboratory operations for CMT projects.

Lead, mentor, and allocate workload for CMT engineers, project managers, and technicians.

Ensure adherence to CMT best practices, ASTM/industry standards, and company QA/QC and safety procedures.

Perform technical reviews of proposals, reports, and calculations; attend project meetings and resolve field issues.

Track and report department budget, revenue, forecasts, utilization, and margins; approve timesheets and expenses; prepare invoices.

Set team goals; drive training and skill development; uphold accreditation and equipment calibration requirements.

Support business development via client engagement and community involvement.

Review daily field reports for technical accuracy; ensure timely report delivery.

Maintain company and DOT/owner-required vehicle care, inspections, and safety compliance.

Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
-
BS in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.

PE license (or ability to obtain licensure within ~3 months of hire).

6+ years of experience in engineering and/or construction, including vertical and horizontal work:
-
Reading/reviewing construction documents; implementing plans/specifications

QA testing oversight, soils/classifications, structural observations

Supervising construction materials testing and project management
-

Strong working knowledge of ASTM standards, construction materials methods, and CMT procedures.

Demonstrated skill with budgets, forecasts, and financial management.

Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; strong written and verbal communication.

Ability to scope RFQs/RFPs, attend site meetings, and develop proposals and cost estimates.

Valid driver’s license with acceptable record; ability to travel as needed.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This role is primarily field-based with routine visits to active construction sites and the laboratory. Conditions may include uneven terrain (wetlands/fields/rough grade), dust, heat/cold, sun exposure, moderate to loud noise, and variable weather. Physical requirements include (not limited to):

Lift/carry 35–75 lbs. up to ~75 feet; frequent standing, walking, driving.

Regular bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, climbing, balancing.

Frequent hand/arm use for typing, handling tools, and operating equipment.

Effective speaking/hearing in noisy environments; visual acuity for field observations and documentation.
