Litigation Associate
Empower Associates
About the Role
Our client, an established mid-sized Boston firm of about 35 attorneys, is looking for a mid-level litigation associate (4+ years of experience) to join its complex business litigation group. This is a strong fit for a driven attorney who wants hands-on guidance from seasoned colleagues, challenging matters, and room to build their own skills and book of work. The role offers meaningful chances to deepen courtroom experience and accelerate career growth.
The associate reports to a member of the firm’s executive committee who oversees associate development, and is paired with a mentor at hire. Associates attend a monthly meeting where the firm shares its financial performance, and they serve on firm committees such as marketing and IT.
This is a full-time, hybrid position based in the firm’s Boston office. The schedule is in the office Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and remote on Wednesday and Friday.
The Work
The caseload is primarily complex business litigation, including breach of contract and other commercial disputes, with the associate expected to be slotted into larger matters, many of them federal court cases in Massachusetts and other jurisdictions. Some matters tie into real estate litigation, and the group occasionally handles construction defect and zoning appeal work. The associate will not sit first chair but will play a substantial role on active cases.
Responsibilities
- Perform in-depth legal research (using Lexis), draft discovery, manage the discovery process closely, and take depositions
- Review documents, prepare witnesses for deposition, and organize exhibits on large commercial matters
- Draft and oppose motions, and argue motions in court
- Prepare cases for trial
- Represent clients at conferences
Qualifications
- 4+ years of litigation experience, including courtroom experience
- Active Massachusetts bar license in good standing (Delaware admission is not required)
- Working familiarity with subpoenas, pleadings, and motion practice, and comfort arguing motions without extensive supervision
- Strong analytical, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary of $140,000-$170,000, depending on experience
- Hours bonus above 1,800 billable hours, paid at one-third of your billing rate per hour, plus an origination bonus. The 1,800-hour mark is a bonus-eligibility threshold, not a condition of continued employment
- Health insurance
- 401(k) with profit sharing
- Paid time off (PTO) and paid holidays
- Continuing mentorship and professional development
- Bar association memberships and payment of annual BBO dues
Path to Shareholder
The firm offers a clear, formula-based path to equity shareholder; roughly half of current shareholders started as associates. Compensation decisions are driven by formula rather than a compensation committee, and entrepreneurial attorneys who build business have significant upside.
About the Firm
Our client is a general-service firm handling corporate, commercial litigation, real estate, employment, tax, and family law matters, among others.
